In 1993, Richard Chamberlain returned to the theatre for a pre-New York touring production of "My Fair Lady" which later opened on Broadway on the 9 December (previews began 26 November) at the Virginia Theatre. Richard Chamberlain starred as Henry Higgins and newcomer Melissa Errico as Eliza Doolittle. After Michael Moriarty took over Richard Chamberlain's role on 8 April 1994 ticket sales plummeted and the show was soon closed. The play consistently grossed in the $500,000 range or 90 percent of it's maximum with Richard in the lead, but only grossed $251,000 or 58 percent with Michael, well below the estimated $320,000 break-even point. Meg Tolin took over the role of Eliza when Melissa had a sore throat and was on vocal rest during some performances. She also took the role of Eliza when Richard went on a successful European tour of "My Fair Lady" during 1995/96.
