THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Richard Chamberlain joined "The Sound Of Music" a year after the revival opened to mixed reviews on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre (W45th and 8th Ave.). With the addition of Richard, and by cast changes including a new leading lady the show improved. Richard plays the part of Captain von Trapp and Laura Benanti, a real-life 19-year old who's lovely to look at and full of talent, plays Maria. Meg Tolin took over the part of Maria on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. The show went on a forty week national tour around the U.S.A. with Meg Tolin as Maria.

Richard makes his first appearance about 10 minutes from the start. The house frontage rolls forward from the back, there is a large French window with two doors opening onto a terrace from which six steps lead down to the front of the stage. The doors are flung open and Richard steps forward onto the terrace. He comes down the steps and gives three loud blasts on a whistle that is hanging around his neck, which are answered by his butler coming in from the side door of the building. After this he appears a lot on stage throughout the performance. At the end of the performance Richard and Laura come on together to take their bow, and the cast gathers around the family and they all sing the chorus from "The Sound Of Music" and then the curtain drops.
